We are excited to announce the open call for Bandung Photography Month 2024, inviting photographers and visual artists to participate in this year’s exhibition themed “Tanah Air”. Translating to “earth and water”, “Tanah Air” is a profound concept that also signifies “motherland”. This theme is especially significant to Bandung, a city with a history of advocating for independence, human rights, and postcolonial discourse through the landmark Asia-Africa Conference of 1955.

“Tanah Air” encourages participants to explore a multitude of perspectives on contemporary issues. Nationalism, identity, migration, diaspora, and conflict are some of the socio-political and cultural dimensions that can be examined. In addition, it provides a lens to address pressing environmental concerns, including the climate crisis, gentrification, natural resource exploitation, and sustainability. On the other hand, the exhibition also seeks to engage with the personal notions of “home”, where memories and collective experiences are deeply rooted. We welcome works that investigate the emotional landscapes of belonging, the intersections of personal histories, and the shared narratives that define our understanding of “motherland”.

This year’s Bandung Photography Month aims to encourage a dynamic dialogue that connects diverse narratives through the power of visual storytelling. We look forward to your contributions that will enrich this exploration of “Tanah Air” and reflect the spirit and complex realities of our world today. Bandung Photography Month 2024 mengundang para fotografer dan seniman visual untuk berpartisipasi dalam open call pameran tahun ini yang bertema “Tanah Air”. Tema ini merupakan sesuatu yang sangat relevan bagi Bandung, sebuah kota dengan sejarah memperjuangkan kemerdekaan, hak asasi manusia, dan diskursus poskolonial melalui Konferensi Asia-Afrika 1955.

“Tanah Air” mendorong peserta untuk mengeksplorasi berbagai perspektif tentang isu-isu kontemporer yang terkait dengan isu nasionalisme, identitas, migrasi, diaspora, konflik, dan berbagai dimensi eksplorasi sosial-politik dan budaya. Selain itu, tema ini juga dapat diinterpretasi secara lebih harfiah untuk melihat masalah lingkungan seperti krisis iklim, gentrifikasi, eksploitasi sumber daya alam, dan keberlanjutan. Di sisi lain, pameran ini juga bertujuan untuk menggali konsep personal tentang “rumah” yang terkait dengan ingatan dan pengalaman kolektif. Kami menyambut karya yang menggali lanskap emosional tentang rasa kepemilikan, persimpangan sejarah personal, dan narasi kolektif yang mendefinisikan pemahaman kita tentang “Tanah Air”.

Bandung Photography Month 2024 bertujuan untuk mendorong dialog dinamis yang menghubungkan beragam narasi melalui kekuatan cerita visual.
